Ullanaq (John Ell ou John L.)
Ullanaq a passé une partie de son enfance avec sa mère Nivisinaaq (Shoofly) avec les baleiniers et plus précisément avec le Capitaine Comer. Il a reçu le nom de John L. d'après le nom du fameux boxeur John L. Sullivan. Certains insinuent que Ullanaq (John Ell) serait en fait le fils du Capitaine, mais la fille d'Ullanaq ne le voit pas ainsi : «Yes, my grandmother had a captain friend', she [Okpik] said. In fact, she had pictures of the captain and used to receive presents of clothes and cheques. But it was after John Ell was born that Angakkuq was living with Shoofly. My grandmother could bear no more children. She had to adopt them. John Ell had no qallunaaq blood. He was true Inuk. » (Eber 1989 : 115).
Oui, ma grand-mère avait un ami capitaine, dit-elle [Okpik]. En fait, elle avait des photos de lui et recevait des chèques et des vêtements en cadeau. Mais Angakkuq n'a commencé à vivre avec Shoofly qu'après la naissance de John Ell. Ma grand-mère ne pouvait plus avoir d'enfants, elle en a donc adopté. John Ell n'avait pas de sang qallunaaq. Il était cent pour cent Inuk. (Eber 1989 : 115)
Lorsque le Capitaine Comer a quitté le Nord, il a offert tout son matériel photographique ainsi que plusieurs photographies au fils de Nivisinaaq. Ullanaq sera reconnu plus tard pour avoir participé à plusieurs expéditions comme interprète.
